I wish that this wasn’t the case, but so often I think we associate God’s character to what is happening in our lives at the moment. So when life is good, God is also good. Yet when life is difficult, God is harsh, unloving or distant.
Life changes. God’s character does not. God has been the same since the dawn of creation, andwill remain the same throughout eternity. God does not change.
So who is God? What parts of His character are true? What have I believed about God that does not align with what His word reveals about Him?
God is faithful. He can be consistently relied on. God never forgets anything. He never fails to do anything that He has set out to do. God is faithful. His faithfulness pours out from His love for us. Deuteronomy 7:9 “Know therefore that the LORD your God is God; He is the faithful God, keeping His covenant of love to a thousandgenerations of those who love Him and keep His commands.”
God is infinite. He is self-existing and without origin. Colossians 1:17 “And He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.”
God is unchanging. Who He is never changes. He stays the same. God’s plans and promises do not change. Malachi 3:6 “I the LORD do not change. So you, the descendants of Jacob, are not destroyed.”
God is never in need of anything. He is self-sufficient. That is why we can go to Him to satisfy all our needs with the assurance that His ability to provide for our need will never “run out.” John 5:26 “For as the Father has life in Himself, so He has granted the Son also to have life in Himself.” Ephesians 3:20 “Now
God is all-powerful. He is omnipotent. He is able and powerful enough to do anything that He wants. There is no limit to His power. And when God plans something, it will happen. Nothing can prevent His plan from happening. Psalm 33:6 “By the word of the LORD the heavens were made, their starry host by the breath of His mouth.” Ephesians 3:20 “God is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine.”
God is all-knowing. He is omniscient. He knows everything. God is aware of all of creation, every moment of every day. Isaiah 46:9-10 “Remember the former things, those of long ago; I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me. I make known the end from the beginning, from ancient times, what is still to come. I say: My purpose will stand, and I will do all that
God is always everywhere. He is omnipresent. God is with us, and the fullness of His presence surrounds us. Psalm 139:7-10 “Where can I go from your Spirit? Or where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast.” Jeremiah 23:23-24 “Am I am God at hand,’ declares the LORD, ‘and not a God afar off? Can a man hide
God is wise. He sees everything in perfect focus. He understands all that is going on and always makes the best decisions in all situations. Romans 11:33 “Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and unfathomable His ways!”
God is good. God is tenderhearted, kind, and benevolent. God is inclined to bless His people because He takes great pleasure in us. Psalm 34:8 “Taste and see that the LORD is good.”
God is righteous and just. He is perfectly right in all He does. Deuteronomy 32:4 “The Rock! His work is perfect. For all His ways are just; a God of faithfulness and without injustice. Righteous and upright is He.
God is gracious and full of mercy. He does not give us what we deserve. God is forgiving, loving and kind towards us. Romans 9:15 “I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.” Psalm 145:8 “TheLORD is gracious and merciful; Slow to anger and great in lovingkindness.”
God is holy. Words cannot adequately describe what the holiness of our God is like. God is set apart. Divine. Sacred. He is unlike any other being. God is complete and infinite perfection. Matthew 5:48 “Therefore you are to be perfect, as your Heavenly Father is perfect.” Revelation 4:8 “Holy, Holy, Holy, is the LORD Almighty.”
God is love. His love is unchanging. God has allowed for His heart to be bound to ours forever. His love is personal and intimate. It knows no limits. John 4:7-8 “Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.”
Life changes, but friends, our God does not. He is faithful and intimate. He is unchanging and self-sufficient. He is all powerful, he’s all knowing and is ever present. God is good. He is righteous and just. God is gracious and full of mercy. He is holy. God is love.
Blessings!
