In the midst of his trials, in the midst of tragedy upon tragedy, Job makes this profound statement: “If only there were a mediator between us,” (meaning himself and God), “someone who could bring us together… Then I could speak to Him without fear, but I cannot do that in my own strength.” (Job 9: 33, 35)
Job was very aware of God’s holiness. He knew that God was not a mortal, and could not be argued with as such. Even while faced with great loss, Job knew that God does “great things to marvelous to understand.” He knew that God “performs countless miracles.” (Job 9: 10) And yet, God was not appearing to exercise this power on Job’s behalf!
What Job wanted more than anything was some answers and the ability to die. To stop the pain. I can imagine it. He has lost so much. He begins to doubt that he holds value and worth to God. He feels distant. He feels like he is being punished severely without having done anything to deserve it. Even as Job questions God, God remains silent. The only replies he receives are from his equally confused – yet much less understanding friends.
What he wants is a mediator. What his heart cries out for is to have One who would be able to stand in the midst of God’s holiness and advocate for him.
Can you relate?
Probably. But we are different than Job. Our wish – our deep desire – for a mediator is a reality. We have this One available to us. His name is Jesus.
1 John 2:1 “My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father – Jesus Christ, the Righteous One.”
Romans 8:34 “Christ Jesus who died- more than that, who was raised to life- is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us.”
Hebrews 7:24-25 “but because Jesus lives forever, he has a permanent priesthood. Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them.”
1 Timothy 2:5 “For there
We have a mediator. We have someone who we can bear our souls to, who has the strength and the has earned the right to stand before our Father advocating on our behalf. He can handle our questions. He can relate to our pain. His help is not limited to those with great resources as payment. His schedule is never too full for us. We need only seek it. Ask it. Give it to Him.
What a gift we have in our mediator! Instead of sitting stuck in our circumstances, we have freedom to come with representation into the throne of God!
Blessings!
