There is a beautiful exchange between King David and God that occurs in 2 Samuel. David was anointed to become Israel’s next king – replacing Saul, but it takes years for this position to actually come to fruition.
King Saul, knowing that David is going to become Israel’s next king, seeks to kill David. Saul has fallen out of favor with God, and becomes consumed with jealousy. David, while hiding from Saul and spending years on the run, refuses to kill Saul even when presented opportunities and with the knowledge of God’s anointing.
Finally, Saul dies and David is made King of Israel. Years of hardship and discouragement have occurred – but David’s heart, dependence on God, and understanding of Him have all grown during this time.
While David begins working on a palace for himself, he also realizes that the place of God’s presence (the Ark of the Covenant) is dwelling in a tent. David wants to honor God. He wants to do better for Him. But God does not want a Temple built by David. God sees his heart, understands the promise of the gift, but responds with a no, and a beautiful exchange between God and David is recorded in 2 Samuel chapter 7.
David understands that when God blesses, His blessings are like no other. “For you are God, O Sovereign LORD. Your words are truth, and you have promised these good things to your servant. And now may it please you to bless the house of your servant, so that it may continue forever before you. For you have spoken, and when you grant a blessing to your servant, O Sovereign LORD, it is an eternal blessing.” (v. 28-29)
God’s blessings for David and his decendants is amazing. Friend, God’s blessings for His children today is equally as amazing. His blessings include promises to never leave or forsake us. He blesses us with the promise of cleansing us from all unrighteousness and the promise to live with Him for eternity in a place where there is no more pain, no more loss, no more sorrow.
Truly there is no blessing that is greater! May we never lose sight of how amazing His blessing really is!
Blessings!
