I have no idea why so many people celebrate Valentine’s Day. Why has this particular day risen to such popularity that it has become such a multi-million dollar holiday? Adults and children alike know that it is coming and look forward to the opportunity to express love and care for others through a variety of cards, small tokens, flowers, and even extravagant gifts.
I am not against Valentine’s Day. I actually like it. I grew up celebrating this day (I’m a sucker for traditions).
Do you suppose that the reason for the popularity of this holiday stems from our deep desire to be loved? Cared for? Encouraged? Noticed? Appreciated?
I think there is some truth in that concept, and yet I think we are blowing it. We demonstrate love, care, encouragement, and appreciation one day out of 365 days? (Perhaps 364, if we do something similar on a birthday!) We are missing an opportunity to love better. We invest poorly into the things that matter most – our loved ones.
I am not writing this as an embittered, forgotten spouse. My sweet husband puts effort into making sure I wake up to flowers and a card every year. I’m not bitter, I just feel like we could do better.
God did.
God’s love and encouragement are not something that is demonstrated one day a year. God’s love is not distant. He is not interested in knowing us from a distance – but desires intimacy – closeness. His gift giving soars off the charts! He provides us with forgiveness, miracles, creation, relationships, and salvation through the gift of His son’s life. Why does He invest this way? Love. Deep rooted – unconditional love.
God’s love is a love that is freely given and never fails. The greatest gift of love has been given – all we have to do is receive it! When we do, our lives will forever be changed.
Blessings!
