I’m not exactly sure how it happens, but I think we sometimes forget that God’s love is not ordinary. It is not a love like we experience from anyone or anything else here on earth.
Earthly love, even in its purest form is tainted. It is limited. There is a piece of “self” that enters into each love relationship and where “self” is – sin is.
This is not so with God. Over and over throughout the history of mankind, God has been revealing His great love for us. Despite the revelations, however, there is such a spectrum of acceptance and belief in Him, right? Some deny His very existence, while others devote every aspect of their life into knowing Him and serving Him. But where do most people lie? Sadly, somewhere in the middle. Out of fear, perhaps, they are not willing to deny His existence, but because of their desire to live for themselves, neither are they willing to draw close to Him for fear that God will call them to live differently.
And yet, God loves. Extravagantly. God never does anything half-way!
Friend, I am not sure where you find yourself on the spectrum of belief, but there are absolutely benefits or blessings that come from drawing near to the God who showers His extravagant love upon his people.
He watches over us and He hears us. “The eyes of the LORD watch over those who do right; His ears are open to their cries for help.” (Psalm 34:15)
He rescues us. “The righteous person faces many troubles, but the LORD comes to the rescue each time.” (Psalm 34:19)
He directs and leads us. “The LORD directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives. Though they stumble, they will never fall, for the LORD holds them by the hand.” (Psalm 37:23-24)
He provides His unfailing love for us and meets all our needs. “Your unfailing love, O LORD, is as vast as the heavens, your faithfulness reaches beyond the clouds. Your righteousness is like the mighty mountains, your justice like the ocean depths. You care for people and animals alike, O LORD. How precious is your unfailing love, O God! All humanity finds shelter in the shadow of your wings. You feed them from the abundance of your own house, letting them drink from your river of delights. For you are the fountain of life, the light by which we see.” (Psalm 36:5-9)
God’s love for us is not ordinary. It’s an above-and-beyond kind of love. It is offered to any and all who will accept it. My past actions do not disqualify me from receiving it. My current struggles and baggage do not cause God to withdraw His love. It is a gift. Freely given. All I need to do is accept the gift of God’s love.
