The Fortress Of God

I love that the image of God as our fortress is one that is used over and over throughout scripture. Even as I sit reading and studying the word this morning – that theme continues to appear. God is my fortress.

In my mind, I am able to picture the doubled walls of Jerusalem. I picture the gigantic stones that were painstakingly shaped elsewhere and transported to build up the city of God. Unlike Jerusalem, which God allowed to be overtaken due to hard hearts and sin, God – as my fortress – cannot be overcome.

“The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strong rock, in him will I trust; my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower.” – Psalm 18:2

When I make God my fortress, I am able to come into His presence – inside His city walls and find protection against the attacks formed against me. God’s walls of protection are solid. They can be trusted. They are firmly in place. Storms may rage, armies may siege, but I am protected. Safe. Surrounded. Secure. Taken care of. Provided for.

Let that sink in. When God is my fortress, I have no reason to fear. No weapon formed against me shall stand. Storms will still come against me. Attacks will still be made, and yet I will arise from the midst of them unscathed, because the LORD is my fortress. My shield. My protector.

In the midst of the chaos, in the middle of it all: “I wait quietly before God, for my victory comes from him. He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress where I will never be shaken.”(Psalm 62:1-2) I know that I will come through on the other side still remaining in the shelter of my fortress.

Can you feel His love? Can you sense His ability to protect? Do you understand the magnitude of His presence? When I am with Him, I will never be shaken.

No other fortress will stand. Do not place your hope and trust in a cheap imitation. It has no power to protect you. Anything less than God is not worth settling for. He deserves our hearts. He deserves our all.

“Let all that I am wait quietly before God, for my hope is in Him. He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress where I will not be shaken. My victory and honor come from God alone. He is my refuge, a rock where no enemy can reach me.” (Psalm 62:5-7)

Blessings!
