Finding God in the Midst of Our Brokenness

As I continue to read through the book of Job, I am struck that while this man has lost so much: his wealth, his children, his health, the respect of his wife, his servants, and the kindness of friends – Job still continues to seek God. He is not afraid to ask God difficult questions. He does not deny God or turn his back on Him. Instead, he wrestles with what He knows to be true of God, and his circumstances.

While Job is under a multitude of scrutiny and attack from his so-called friends, Job replies, “But as for me, I know that my Redeemer lives, and He will stand upon the earth at last. And after my body has decayed, yet in my body I will see God! I will see Him for myself. Yes, I will see Him with my own eyes. I am overwhelmed at the thought!” (Job 19:25-27)

Job’s circumstances have not changed for the better. His words are not coming out of praise for new blessings. His situation, if anything, has become worse. His friends will not leave him alone. Instead of presenting him with hope or encouragement, they shower upon him words of doom and condemnation. They paint a picture of God that exhibits hints of truth, but twist His character.

Job is under full attack of his body, his mind, and even his very soul – and yet he continues to seek God. He continues to look for Him. He continues to plead his case before Him. And Job continues to acknowledge God’s greatness.

“God stretches the Northern sky over empty space and hangs the earth on nothing. He wraps the rain in His thick clouds, and the clouds don’t burst with the weight. He covers the face of the moon, shrouding it with His clouds. He created the horizon when He separated the waters; He set the boundary between day and night. The foundations of heaven tremble; they shudder at His rebuke. By His power the sea grew calm. By His skill He crushed the great sea monster. His Spirit made the heavens beautiful, and His power pierced the gliding serpent. These are just the beginning of all He does, merely a whisper of His power. Who, then, can comprehend the thunder of His power?” (Job 26:7-14)

Job does not give in to the circumstances. He continues to seek God, acknowledge His goodness, and proclaim His power. Even as he is wrestling.

In the midst of our pain, we would do well to keep a tight hold on the God that we know and serve, and wrestle with Him in our lack of understanding. God promises that when we seek Him, we will find Him. When we find ourselves in the dark places, may we never tire of seeking Him. For He will be found! God is big enough to handle our wrestling.

Blessings!
