God’s word holds true. When God says He will do something, God does it.
As I continue to read through the book of Jeremiah, I am reminded of a constant theme. God speaks to His people, in this case through his prophet, Jeremiah. Every time that God speaks, His word came into being. For much of this book, things are happening and being foretold that are not very popular or if we are being honest – are horrifying. God is warning of all the punishment that is coming for leaving Him and letting them know that the King of Babylon will soon be upon them to destroy the majority of them.
God’s word held true. Everything that God told Jeremiah to speak ended up coming to pass. Much of Israel was destroyed. The survivors were led off into captivity for 70 years. But just as God predicted this punishment, God also spoke of blessing. He spoke of his great plan for his people. One of God’s most beloved promises: “For I know the plans I have for you,” says the LORD. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. In those days when you pray, I will listen. If you look for me wholeheartedly, you will find me.” (Jeremiah 29:11-13), stems from this time period.
God’s word holds true. His promises can be counted on. God delights in bringing beauty from the ashes.
I was reminded of this again yesterday. Nearly two decades have passed since God spoke into my life with a promise for my future. I knew that God spoke it. I believe that God’s words are true and will come to pass. Where I struggled is in the waiting. As time passed, I began to have little cracks of doubt come into my mind. Did God really say these things? Could I have imagined it? Has God changed his mind? If God did mean it, why is nothing happening? If only I could see God’s hand at work, preparing the way and shaping my heart, I would have extinguished all doubts the moment they tried to seep in. God has a plan. He has a purpose. His promises and word hold true. How do I know? How am I reminded? Yesterday I received my first “Author’s Contract” to co-write a book for a faith-based publishing company. I will sign my name to the contract today, and as I do I will be affirming God’s mysterious and faithful ways of blessing His people and keeping His word.
Friend, wherever you find yourself in the midst of this journey we call “life,” I would encourage you to rely on, and trust in, the One who’s words hold true.
Blessings!
