My Help

  • Post author:

I find it strange that in all of the information and meetings that have been thrown at me over the years regarding my child’s disability – and despite the fact that I have a Masters Degree in Special Education – I am still stumbling around and scrambling to get things in order for my child. It feels like I know quite a bit about IEP’s, heart conditions (at least Hannah’s), Oppositional Defiant Disorder, and the day to day knowledge of what works and what doesn’t. With that said, I still feel completely spun out or on a steep incline of transitions. While I have been working like crazy to familiarize myself with things like guardianship, brokerages, community transition programs, and local supports, I find myself on a somewhat overwhelming journey with a steep learning curve.

Unless these things have been a part of your life, most likely you know little about them. You may not even know they exist. And so, as I continue down this path, those who can provide help and information are relatively few.

But here’s the thing: While information about services and supports is helpful and good for me to know, what I really desire is to know that everything is going to be alright for my child. The help I really want is that which ensures that she is going to be taken care of, set up for success, supported, safe, and enjoys her life.

That help doesn’t come from a program or agency. That help only comes from the One who sees all, knows all, and absolutely adores His girl.

I may be the one here on earth trying to get things set up for her, but my strength is limited. My resources are not enough. But her Father’s? Her Father is the One who can move the mountains that need to be moved. Her Father is the One who knit her together and formed her within my womb. Her Father is the One who absolutely adores her and will go to the greatest of lengths to provide for all her needs.

Her help – my help – comes from the LORD.

“I look up to the mountains – does my help come from there? My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth! He will not let you stumble; the One who watches over you will not slumber. Indeed, He who watches over Israel never slumbers or sleeps. The LORD himself watches over you! The LORD stands beside you as your protective shade. The sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon at night. The LORD keeps you from all harm and watches over your life. The LORD keeps watch over you as you come and go, both now and forever.” (Psalm 121)

Blessings!

Michelle I also have a Special Needs child and know all of the struggles you mentioned. Knowing He is with her helps so much.
